Training Retrievers with Nigel Mann

Nigel Mann started training gundogs because he wanted a well-behaved shooting companion. He is an amateur who has been successful competing against professionals for a number of years and is a keen field trialler. The vast majority of gundogs in the countryside are used for shooting and never go near a field trial. The owners want a well-behaved dog to retrieve the game they shoot without constant direction once their dog is in the area of the fall. Nigel feels that many of the dogs that run in field trials today are like puppets on a whistle - the handlers find the retrieve, not the dog. One of the underlying reasons for this book is that he believes his methods differ in a number of aspects to those already expressed in other books and, in particular, that a puppy's education should begin at only eight to ten weeks old.
